Enterprise Severnside Series at Penarth Yacht Club - By Phil Kirk

Close racing was the order of the day on Sunday 21st June for Penarth’s one day open. This was the fourth event of the Severnside area circuit in which no one team has dominated. The light wind was blowing offshore making the conditions around the windward mark a bit shifty.

Race one used a simple triangular course and was led from start to finish by Ron Dungey and Suzanne Hughes (Penarth Y.C.). Ron, having probably the most experience of sailing at Penarth decided that the right would pay and was rewarded handsomely by banging the right hand corner on each beat. Phil Kirk and Jane Beynon (Frampton) closed up with Ron and Suzanne at the end of lap two but were not able to pass. Tom Atkin and Clare Houghton (Penarth) and Dave Marsden and Steve Higgs (Bristol Corinthian) also closed on the leaders and both were able to pass Phil and Jane on the final beat.

The start of race two was closely contested despite the freshening breeze. The shifty winds near the windward mark kept the fleet close together and everyone guessing what the pecking order would be. Tom and Clare appeared victorious but closely followed by a half the fleet. They held their slim lead to the finish. Steve Lucey and Claudia Haynes challenged hard and finished second with Dave and Steve in third.

The final race started with a general recall. The fleet got away on the second attempt. Phil and Jane had a poor start and elected to head right away from the fleet. When they tacked they hooked into a steady lift and added by the lee bow effect from the tide, were able to round the windward mark in 1st. Tom and Clare were in second and making gains off wind with their fly away pole. Phil and Jane appeared safe until the final beat and having decided to sail a close cover over Tom and Clare had not considered that Jeff Dyer and Gina Carrington (Penarth) were close enough to catch them. Jeff and Gina went hard right and sailed round the two leading boats to win the race. Phil and Jane finished second in front of Tom and Clare.

Overall tom and Clare were victorious with 3 points. Phil and Jane won the tie for second from Dave and Steve who both had 6 points. 4th and 5th positions were also tied on 7 points. John and Beth Lewis, who were sailing their first open, were rewarded for their endeavour with a racing rules book donated by Marjorie Barker.

Once again Penarth had put on a super day’s racing. The race officer’s team did an excellent job setting the courses and turning the races around quickly. The fleet were also delighted with the buffet generously prepared by Ron’s wife.

Enterprise Severnside Championships at Penarth Yacht Club - By Steve Graham, Jeff Dyer, Clare Houghton & Paul Young

Penarth YC welcomed visitors from Burghfield, Northampton, Redditch, Midland, Bristol and Frampton sailing clubs over the blustery weekend of 16th/17th May.

After some delay waiting for the wind to drop the first race got away in a good force 4/5. Slight confusion with the flags caused a chaotic start line with many boats away late. Penarth members Tom Atkin and Clare Houghton led with a pack of five boats in hot pursuit. After some very tight racing and a few capsizes Steve Graham and James Holmes (Northampton SC) took the lead and eventually line honours.

Blustery conditions for the Penarth Enterprise Open - Photo © Clive Morgan

Race two sailed on Sunday saw a stiffer breeze which was much less gusty. The course was set further out to sea in less sheltered winds with an Olympic course testing the sailors on all points of sailing. Jeff Dyer and John Sorenson (Penarth YC), Jon Woodward and Karen Jewkes (Redditch SC), and Ann Jackson and Alan Skeens (Burghfield SC) changed places several times until Tom and Clare pulled through. The final positions were Jeff and John first, Jon and Karen second and Tom and Clare third.

Race three was started in the same wind strength as the final legs of race two – a breezy 25mph, with two /three foot waves to accompany it. Jeff and John got a cracking start and led the race from the off with Tom and Clare in hot pursuit. With lot of position changing throughout the fleet and some hairy reaching Jeff and John held the lead to the end, with Jon and Karen second and Steve and James third, pushing Tom and Clare out of position due to a spectacular gybe , when everyone else was tacking it.

As the wind continued to build, race four started with a much reduced fleet. Five boats joined the start with Jeff and John coming out on top. After the beat Steve and James chased hard down the reaches to close the gap and then continued to press Jeff and John hard for the lead. At the final gybe mark the leaders both tacked allowing Ann and Alan to close. Steve and James sailed a fast last reach to finish first with Ann and Alan just pipping Jeff and John on the line to finish second.

After the presentation, winning helm Steve Graham thanked all the members of Penarth YC for a fantastic weekend.

Enterprise Open at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club -
By Phil Kirk

The first event of the Enterprise Severnside Series at Bristol Corinthian attracted 14 boats. The shifty North Easterly wind proved a challenge to the tactically minded sailors and the Ken Falcon the OOD.

Race 1 was led from start to finish by David Marsden and Nikki Linfield (BCYC). Towards the end of the race his lead was reduced as the two boats battling for second caught up. Phil Kirk and Sarah Gregson (Frampton) got the better of Alice Allen and Sharky (BCYC) and the three boats crossed the line in close formation.

Race 2 saw Alice and Sharky develop a monstrous lead after getting the shifts right on the first beat. They were pursued by Dave and Nikki, Phil and Jackie Franklin (BCYC) and Ian Wakeling and Sean O’neil (BCYC). Ian and Sean later learned they were OCS. After a poor start Phil and Sarah managed catch and pass 2 boats on a light wind reach and got lucky with the wind shifts to gain second on the final run. Phil and Jackie also made gains to finish 3rd.

Going into the final race the event could still be won by 3 boats. The first start was abandoned when the wind shifted 90 degrees. The fleet got away cleanly after the wind settled down to the original direction. Chris Palmer and Dee Larkin (Penarth) led the first two laps after sailing the shifts on the beat to perfection. However the later half of the race became a match race between Alice and Sharky and Phil and Sarah who were never more than a boat length apart. After a tacking duel up the final beat Alice and Sharky led at the windward mark. Phil and Sarah drew level on the run forcing Alice and Sharky to instigate a gybing duel. Phil and Sarah were just able to hold the lead at the leeward mark and on the short reach to the finish. Dave and Nikki took third. The finishing order of the last race also reflected the top three places for the event.

Bristol Corinthian did a great job providing good racing, good food and great hospitality. We all look forward to next year.

Enterprise Open at Penarth Yacht Club by Phil Kirk - 7 September 2008

17 Enterprises enjoyed the unusually dry weather in a shifty force 3-4 wind at Penarth. This was the 6th event of the Severnside Area series and for once the overall series positions were still close. 3 races were planned over the high tide with the first start at an unsociable 10:00am. Tom Atkin and Clare Houghton (Penarth) led from the pin end in race one chased by Phil Kirk and Sarah Gregson (Frampton) and Steve Lucey and Claudia Haynes (Penarth). On the second Beat Phil and Sarah found a lift and pulled ahead and held the lead until the finish.

In race two a different group of sailors battled for the lead. Russell Bright and Alison Culverwell (Penarth) led Ian Wakeling and Kerry Pinker (Bristol) then Martyn Bromley and young Rory Hune at the windward mark. This group had initially sailed up the left side of the course and then lee bowed the ebbing tide for much of the beat. The first two held their positions to the finish while Martyn and Rory were edged into 4th by Phil and Sarah. Roger Appleby, travelling away from Frampton for the first time in 4 years, crewed by Jane Beynon in her first sea open, sailed into 5th.

By the third race the tide was ebbing fast. Phil and Sarah rounded the windward mark in front of Tom and Clare and this pair slowly pulled away from the fleet. Russell and Alison and Ian and Kerry gave chase. On the second beat Tom and Clare initially closed the gap but despite splitting tacks on three occasions Phil and Sarah were just able to cross when they next met. The lighter leaders had a slight advantage off wind and made gains in the gusts. The top four boats finished in the above positions.

With two wins Phil and Sarah had secured victory. While Tom and Claire were counting two seconds, Russell and Alison took second overall by virtue of winning race 2. The overall series positions are still close so the next round of the Severnside Area circuit at Bristol Corinthian will attract a lot of interest.

Severnside Enterprises at the Penarth Yacht Club Regatta by Richard Leach - 28-29 June 2008

This has been a windy year so far and this weekend was no exception. Sixteen boats lined up in 25 knots for the first of two races sailed on Saturday.

It's difficult writing an accurate report when one was fighting for survival oneself but having got to first gybe mark in 5th. Jonathan Woodward and Alex Haliwell (Redditch S.C.) planed past on there way back from a poor start heading for a second place. Approaching the gybe mark for a second time foolishly hoping for a capsize ahead when we, (Richard Leach and Jane Pickford (PYC), found our selves swimming, the boat behind also joined us in the Bristol Channel. We were up and away quickly and only lost one place to Phil Kirk and Sarah Gregson (Frampton upon Severn). Mean while Jonathan was passing Ian Wakeling and Nicki Linfield (Bristol Corinthian Y.C.) 3rd, who were revelling in the windy conditions but not getting to Jeff Dyer and Tom Atkin (PYC) who finished first.

Traditionally the second race on Saturday is the Penyot Pin the prize a barrel of beer. Conditions were such that only eight boats were tempted by this. Jeff has drunk a lot of beer on Regatta Saturdays over the years but this was not going to be one of them, even with Toms help they could only manage fourth behind Johnathan and Alex 1st , Phil and Sarah 2nd and Ian and Nicki 3rd .

The forecast for Sunday was lighter winds, they were wrong, a race started in 30 knots. The race officer Martin Bromley was in a quandary, but most were in control of there boats a late swing in the wind skewed the course but we started. The race was shortened to 1 lap and racing was abandoned with 35 knots being recorded on the committee boat and up turned boats on most corners of the course. A creditable thirteen boats finished, led home by Jonathan and Alex followed by Ian and Nikki with Steve Berry and Dave Webster (PYC) in third, Tom Atkin and Jeff Dyer (PYC) 4th Steve Lucey and Claudia Haynes (PYC) finished a consistent weekend with a 5th to go with a 4th and 5th on Saturday.

We all sailed for home, some with damage, to find the Mirror and Topper fleets still racing.

Enterprise Severnside Series at Cardiff Bay Yacht Club by Richard Leach - 1 June 2008

On Sunday 1st of June the fourth event of Severnside series for the Dragon Trophy took place at Cardiff Bay Yacht Club, eight visiting boats were greeted by very light winds coming over the barrage from the Southeast. This direction is favourable for sailing on the Bay now that high rise developments skirt the shore from the southwest through to the north.

We were short of a race officer and the fleet were grateful to Roy Barker and Minnie Lucey for stepping into the breach. They set three races back to back and after an unusual out break of democracy, the fleet voted to sail triangle sausage courses.

Tom Atkin and Clare Houghton (Penarth Y.C.) led the first race as far as the wing mark where they gave water to Ian Wakling and Niki Linfield (Bristol Corinthian S.C.), these crews proved to be the class of the fleet, Tom and Clare got passed on the beat and held on to win the race. The rest of the fleet were spread out with Richard Leach and Jane Pickford (PYC) in a distant third.

The second race again had Tom and Ian battling at the front, this time third place was briefly held by Ron Dungey and Elizabeth Roth (PYC) but they were muscled out of it by Chris Palmer and Dee Larkin (PYC) leaving Ron doing turns.

Tom and Clare with two firsts, did not need to sail the final race; the wind had dropped further making for some fickle sailing. Hugh Phillips and Maxine Levett (PYC) went hard right off the start line and when they tacked back, crossed the fleet. The first reach had turned into a slow run. Richard and Jane after a dreadful start went left, found some wind, and passed half the fleet. Ian and Niki were troubled to see two boats, counting thirds, ahead of them, but by the end of the next beat they had passed both and with our leader Hugh now heading for the wrong mark, victory and second place overall was theirs.

Thanks to Idris and Ian for the safety cover.

Enterprise Open at Frampton on Severn Sailing Club by Phil Kirk 27 April 2008

Frampton laid out warm sunshine and a gentle breeze for Frampton’s Enterprise open. The race officer claimed to have cancelled the rain too.

Phil Kirk and James Askew (Frampton) led race one from start to finish. Roger Appleby and Jane Beynon (Frampton) held 2nd place for a lap until Ian Wakling and Sean O’Neil (Bristol Corinthian) sneaked past and defended 2nd until the finish. The next four boats remained close together throughout the race and places changed on every lap. Geoff Coxe and Sue Beynon (Frampton) were enjoying their pace with their new sails which helped them to fend off the close competition to finish 3rd. In only their 2nd open Rachael and Alan Hamilton (Bristol Corinthian) pulled of a spectacular overtaking move at the last mark gaining two places to finish 4th.

Race 2 Saw Geoff and Sue lead at the first mark closely followed by Phil and James. The lead changed on the second beat and Phil and James pulled out a lead which they held to the finish. After a very close race Ian and Sean did enough to hold third at the finish. Keith Merdith and Harry Web new to the Enterprise and courageously sailing their first open were improving their boat speed and technique all the time. It was good to see their hard work and determination paying off.

The third and last race was sailed in a stiff breeze. Ian and Sean started well to lead at the first mark from Dave and Steve. These BCYC club mates were locked in a duel for the first two laps with Roger and Jane snapping at their transoms. Phil and James had wrongly thought they were over the line at the start and had gone back to restart. By lap two they were in contention with the leaders and were able to take the lead. Dave and Steve passed Ian and Sean to stay in 2nd. They held these positions until the finish with Ian and Sean in third.

Phil and James had won the event with minimum points ahead of Ian and Sean in 2nd and Geoff and Sue in 3rd both with 5 points. The race officer, galley and helpers were thanked for running an excellent event.

Enterprise Severnside Championship at Penarth Yacht Club by Richard Leach 12-13 April 2008

Twenty three boats braved the cool Welsh waters of the Bristol Channel on the weekend of the 12 and 13th April for the Severnside area championship and the second event of the open series for the Dragon Trophy.

Two races back to back were sailed on the Saturday in strong winds. The first was won by Richard Adams and Martin Weatherstone (Bartley S.C.) The large contingent of local boats were amused to see local hero Jeff Dyer and Nick Close (Penarth Y.C.) capsizing to windward at the leeward mark This allowed Steve Graham and Jonathan Woodward (Northhampton S.C.) to come through to second and Tom Atkin and Clare Houghton (PYC) to get third.

After an adjustment of the course and a little wait for the stragglers to finish the second race was sailed in a strengthening wind. Jeff and Nick (PYC) won this one with Tom and Clare second with Richard and Martin third. Steve Lucy and Claudia Haynes showed heavy weather consistency with fourth place in both races

Sunday brought lighter winds that could not decide which direction it was coming from or what strength it was blowing. Race officer and Commodore Martin Bromley and his team of support boats were very busy shifting marks back and forth.

It was the day of the Area Chairman past and present, Phil Kirk and Sarah Gregson (Frampton upon Severn S.C.) won race three and four and Roy Barker and Minnie Lucy (PYC) won the final race. Roy retired at the last AGM from the post of Area chairman after tenure of at least 26 years.

The minor places were mainly shared by crews already mentioned (full results at www.entsevernside.info) however a mention for Ian Wakeling and Nicki Linfield (Bristol Corinthian Y.C.) and Lynne Shaw and John Sorenson (PYC) third and fourth in race four. Dave Marsden and Steve Higgs were fourth in the final race.

Enterprise Open at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club by Ian Wakeling - 6 April 2008

Snow showers greet fleet

Fifteen Enterprises arrived at Bristol Corinthian for the first Severnside Open Meeting. They were met by Bristol's infamous northerly with sixty degree shifts, winds from force 1 to 4 and, at first, horizontal snow showers.

Nigel Bird crewed by wife Andy returned to his old home and showed that he could still find his way through the shifts finally winning the meeting on count back from Tom Atkin and Clair Houghton. But there were many place changes in the shifts.

Ian Wakeling and Nikki Linfield went right up the first beat to lead from Nigel and Tom but by the end of the second beat places were reversed. The right paid as Rachel Holloway, in her first open, rounded the first mark fifth and held on to finish seventh.

In the second race Alan Galoway and Alan Bishop found the shifts to lead at the first mark. Phil Kirk crewed by Jane Beynon, in her first open meeting, pulled through to win from Nigel and Tom.

Snow squalls reduced the final race entry with Nigel winning from Tom with Roy Barker and Minnie Lucey third.

Overall Results:

1st Nigel and Andy Bird (Papercourt) 3pts

2nd Tom Atkin and Clair Houghton (Penarth) 3pts

3rd Phil Kirk and Jane Beynon (Frampton) 5pts

4th Roy Barker and Minnie Lucey (Penarth) 6pts

5th Ian Wakeling and Nikki Linfield (Bristol Corinthian) 10pts
