2009 Midland Area open meetings
Staunton Harold Sailing Club hosted the final of the Speed Sails sponsored Enterprise Double Chine series on Saturday 17th October.
A fleet of 15 boats were greeted with good October weather and a force 2/3. Race 1: Six boats broke away from the fleet with Alan and Matt Johnson (SCYC) finally taking the winning gun from Steve Graham and guest crew Peter Gray from SHSC. Jon Woodward and Miss Jewkes from Redditch were 3rd.
Race 2: Several boats were eager starters for the second race including Alan and Matt. Unfortunately for the rest of the fleet this did not stop them taking the winning gun, although this was after a close tussle with Brian Garrison and Tim Elliot from Rotherham. Third place was taken by Barry Moss (Shustoke) with Wendy Gray from the home club who had also broken clear of the fleet.
Race 3: All was open for the third race with Alan and Matt already having won the meeting. Second place was up for grabs with several boats close on points. Steve and Peter took an early lead but the wind was dropping and becoming patchy. At the final mark they were ahead of Ges Brown (Hallamshire) and Julie Morre with Nigel and Diana Pepperrdine (SHSC) in third. Ges and Nigel gained an edge over Steve but it was still was not clear who would take the gun. The breeze in the final 200m did not favour Ges. Nigel and Diana crept through to take the winning gun. Ges was second and Steve third.
Thank you to Simon Kelsall and his race team for organizing the event and to Josie Adams and the Comet fleet for sharing the day with the Enterprises.

Emberton Park Sailing Club Open Meeting - by Paul Young, Julie Moore and Luke Fisher 11 October 2009
This joint Midland / Eastern event, the fourteenth in the 2009 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails, was held at Emberton Park Sailing Club on Sunday 11th October. The twelve boat fleet included visitors from Redditch, Grafham, Staunton Harold, Midland, Tamworth and Aldenham sailing clubs who enjoyed a dry but cloudy day with a moderate wind.
In the first race Luke Fisher and Daniel Fisher (Emberton Park SC) rounded the windward mark first closely followed by Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC), Jon Woodward and Julie Moore (Redditch SC) and Nigel and Diana Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC). Later Jon and Julie overtook Mike and Christine on the run down to the next mark and also caught up ground on Luke and Daniel. Jon and Julie took the lead on the next beat only to hit the leeward mark at the start of the second lap allowing Nigel and Diana to take the lead. Mike and Christine capsized on this leg following a tack. Jon and Julie eventually took back the lead to finish first, second were Phil Bevan and Laura Bevan (Grafham Water SC) and third were Nigel and Diana.

The second race started after an excellent lunch on a new course, this time both Jon and Julie and Nigel and Diana were over the line at the start and had to return. Phil and Laura lead up the short first beat but it was Paul Young and Iain Leiper (Midland SC) who rounded first. Phil and Laura soon built a huge lead which they held for the next three laps with Nigel and Diana and Luke and Daniel some way behind. Near the end of the lap when you had to decide which side of the island to go, Jon and Julie, Nigel and Diana and Luke and Daniel opted for the wider clubhouse side whilst Phil and Laura and Mike and Christine went the other side, with Mike and Christine losing out here. Jon and Julie overtook Luke and Daniel at another windward mark to gain second place. At the finish Jon and Julie won again, second were Nigel and Diana, third were Phil and Laura and fourth Luke and Daniel.

With the overall winner already decided the third race would decide the second and third places. This race started on another new course. At least two boats were over the line after another chaotic start. Phil and Laura led at the windward mark with Paul and Iain in second. Jon and Julie caught up after a couple of laps to pass Paul and Iain to gain second place, with Nigel and Diana pushing hard in fourth. On the last lap Nigel and Diana managed to pass Paul and Iain at a leeward mark. At the finish Phil and Laura won with Jon and Julie second and Nigel and Diana third, both in this race and the meeting.

Olton Mere Sailing Club Open Meeting - by Paul Young 26 September 2009
This event the thirteenth in the 2009 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Olton Mere SC on Saturday 26th September.
The very light and variable winds combined with low water level probably reduced the turnout but a small but competitive fleet of six boats, which included visitors from both Tamworth and Midland Sailing Clubs still enjoyed some close racing in the warm sunshine.
In the first race Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) got the best start and led at the first windward mark. On the following two legs both Nigel Allso and Kate Brazier (Tamworth SC) and Paul Young and Chris Winters (Midland SC) overtook Mike and Christine. Mike and Christine later recovered to gain second place with Nigel and Kate some considerable distance in front. At the finish Nigel and Kate won easily, however a misunderstanding in the finish procedure by Mike and Christine allowed Kevin Rose and Laura Humphrey (Olton Mere SC), and Paul and Chris past to finish second and third.
In the second race following another good start Mike and Christine again led at the windward mark closely followed by Nigel and Kate. Nigel and Kate overtook after a lap when Mike and Christine unfortunately got the wrong side of a windshift. These positions were held to the finish with the local boat of Tom White and Maria Gidley (Olton Mere SC) getting third place.
Nigel and Kate having already won did not start the third race. Mike and Christine again led at the windward mark followed by Tom and Maria; these positions remained to the finish. On the last lap Paul and Chris overtook both Phil Harrison and Chad (Midland SC) and Kevin and Laura to take third.

Midland Series at Nottingham Sailing Club - By Paul Young
This event the twelfth in in the 2009 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed sails was held at Nottingham Sailing Club on Sunday 13th September.
The small but competitive eight boat fleet included visitors from Tamworth, Midland and Emberton Park Sailing Clubs who enjoyed a sunny day with a moderate wind blowing across the river.
In the first race Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) got a good start to lead from start to finish. Martin Bottomley and Iain Leiper (Emberton Park SC) also started well but slipped back to finish fourth. Paul Young and Megan Ward (Midland SC) recovered from a bad start to finish second following a battle with local sailors Ken Hemsell and Mo Meakin (Nottingham SC) who took third place.
The second race saw Paul and Megan get a good start and lead at the first mark. Mike and Christine caught up on the following downwind leg, there was then much jostling for positions on the next beat until Mike and Christine broke clear. Martin and Iain then came forward to challenge Paul and Megan who managed to pull clear. At the finish Mike and Christine won, second were Paul and Megan and third were Martin and Iain.
The third race saw Paul and Megan get another good start to lead at the windward mark, which was made more difficult to round by two large pleasure trip boats doing three point turns close by. Second were Martin and Iain who challenged Paul and Megan downwind. Later Paul and Megan pulled away on the following beat and then led to the finish. Second were Martin and Iain with third club commodore Nigel Nurse and Laura Cushie (Nottingham SC).
Winning helm Mike Cossey thanked everyone at Nottingham SC for an excellent day.

Hollowell Sailing Club Open - By Steve Graham, Ges Brown, Barry Moss and Paul Young 26 July 2009 - All photogrpahs taken by Sylvia Holyoak
This event the eleventh in the 2009 Midland Area Double Chine Series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Hollowell Sailing Club on Sunday 26th July.
The twelve boat fleet included visitors from Redditch, Chester, Northampton, Shustoke, Grafham, Tamworth, Rugby, Midland, Hunts and Girton sailing clubs who enjoyed a dry day with a light to moderate south westerly wind which was quite gusty at times.

In the first race Ges Brown and Chris Blundell (Chester SC) led at the first windward mark from Steve Graham and James Holmes (Northampton SC) with Jonathan Woodward and Alex Halliwell (Redditch/WLYC) third. Steve and James and Jonathan and Alex exchanged places several times with Jonathan and Alex coming out on top, they then continued to push Ges and Chris hard for first place, only for Ges and Chris to cross the line in silence after being over the line at the start handing the win to Jonathan and Alex. Steve and James were Second with Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) third.

The second race saw a slightly increased wind. All boats had a clean start with Jonathan and Alex first to the windward mark closely followed by Phil and Laura Bevan (Grafham SC) with Steve and James third, Steve and James was unlucky to hit the mark resulting in a 360 turn. The next run saw a big wind shift, with Ges and Chris benefiting from it getting through to third. These positions continued to the last lap when Ges and Chris managed to squeeze pass Phil and Laura to get Second. Jonathan and Alex won again with Phil and Laura third and Steve and James fourth.

The third race again saw Jonathan and Alex lead at the windward mark closely followed by Barry Moss and Julie Moore (Shustoke SC) with Steve and James third. Jonathan and Alex continued to lead for another two laps until Barry and Julie got past. Jonathan and Alex retook the lead off wind but Barry and Julie got back on the beats to win, with Jonathan and Alex Second and Ges and Chris third. Thanks to Hollowell SC for a great day's racing.

Melton Mowbray Sailing Club Open - By Paul Young 9 May 2009 - photographs taken by Sean Graham
This event, the fifth in the 2009 Midland Area Double Chine series sponsored by Speed Sails, was held at Melton Mowbray SC on Saturday 9th May.
The ten boat fleet included Visitors from Tamworth, Emberton Park and Midland sailing clubs who enjoyed a sunny day with a moderate South Westerly wind.

In the first race Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) got the best start and led at the windward mark from Paul Young and Nancy Gudgeon (Midland SC) and third Peter Pollard and Jacob Duce (Melton Mowbray SC). Mike and Christine continued to build up a huge lead and won convincingly and the race finished in this order.

After a superb lunch put on by Sue and her galley team which would put many restaurants to shame, the second race was started on a new course. This time Paul and Nancy got the best start from the port end of the line and soon got well clear. The rest of the fleet started at the starboard end and the battle for second third and fourth places soon became quite intense, with the order changing constantly. David Simmonds and Gill Cooper (Melton Mowbray SC) was second around the windward mark ,with Martin Bottomley and Chris Duce (Emberton Park SC) third and Peter and Jacob fourth and Mike and Christine fifth.
On a following downwind leg in some of the strongest wind of the day, Mike and Christine gybed to gain an advantageous position which resulted in a spectacular capsize and retirement. At the finish it was Paul and Nancy first, Martin and Chris second, David and Gill third and Peter and Jacob fourth.

This left the meeting wide open with much to play for in the third race which was sailed on another new course. This time Paul and Nancy made another good start to lead at the first mark hotly pursued by Martin and Chris with the rest of the fleet close behind. Paul and Nancy managed to pull out a lead on the next few legs whilst the rest of the fleet battled again. At the finish Paul and Nancy were first, Martin and Chris second with Mike and Christine third.
At the prize giving a big thank you was given to Melton Mowbray Sailing Club who put on a magnificent day.

Rugby & Daventry Sailing Club Open - By Paul Young 22 March 2009
This event, the first in the 2009 Midland area Double Chine series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Rugby and Daventry SC on Sunday 22nd March.
The ten boats included visitors from as far away as Stockport and Wigan who enjoyed a sunny day with a gusty north westerly wind which caused much excitement and a few capsizes.
In the first race Alan and Matt Johnson (SCYC) starting at the favoured port end of the start line, exploited the full benefits of this to lead at the windward mark, followed by Ges Brown/Dennis Swain (Hallamshire) in second and Steve Graham/James Holmes (Northampton SC) third, with Martin and Laurence Davies (Rugby and Daventry SC) fourth.
The shifty and gusty winds caused place changes throughout the fleet on both the upwind and downwind legs. Alan and Matt however held their position throughout at the front to finish first, followed by Ges and Dennis with Steve and James third. Karen Morris and Lisa Woods (Etherow SC) unfortunately retired after a spectacular capsize in front of the clubhouse.
After an excellent cooked lunch the second race started in slightly stronger conditions and on a new course. Alan and Matt led at the first mark and pulled out a huge lead, followed by Steve and James who on the second lap filled the boat up with water whilst doing turns allowing Martin and Laurence and Ges and Dennis past to battle for second place until Ges and Dennis tipped it in at the leeward mark, allowing Steve and James back to third. These places then remained to the finish.
The third race was probably the most eventful at a busy first mark Russell and Jo Brayshaw (Hollowell SC) capsized, Steve and James rounded first and built a huge lead with second a surprised Andy Flack crewed by his ten year old son Robin, and third Ges and Dennis who used their superior boat speed downwind to gain second place on the run.
On the following laps Alan and Matt recovered from a slow start to pull through to second and then reel in Steve and James to take the lead on the penultimate lap. Steve and James held onto second place in this race to give them second place overall.
At the prize giving Alan Johnson thanked Rugby and Daventry SC and all the competitors for an excellent day.

In the first race Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) led at the first windward mark with Steve Graham and James Holmes (Northampton SC) second and Nigel Allso and Kate Brazier (Tamworth SC) third. On the second lap Steve and James took full advantage of a wind shift to gain the lead which they held to the finish .Nigel and Kate finished Second with Mike and Christine third.
The second race held on a new course saw Steve and James lead from start to finish, behind this there was some extremely close racing with positions changing constantly. Eventually Nigel and Kate broke clear to finish second with Paul Young and Therese O` Toole (Midland SC) third.
The third race sailed on another new course saw Martin Bottomley and Jonathan Woodward lead at the windward mark second were Steve and James and third Paul and Therese. As the wind increased Steve pulled through to first on the run. At mark four Martin and Jonathan and also Paul and Therese lost out to Nigel and Kate and Mike and Christine who took full advantage of the situation to claim second and third positions which they held to the finish.
At the prize giving winning crew James Holmes thanked everyone at Midland SC for a good day's racing.

Midland Area Championships at Notts County by
Steve Graham, Jane Scutt, Ali Morrish & Paul Young
Notts County SC sponsored by Towergate Mardon Insurance and Speed Sails welcomed visitors from Northampton, Chester, Middle Nene, Hallamshire, Tamworth, Emberton Park, Midland, SCYC and St Mary's Loch Sailing Clubs over the weekend of 20th/21st June 2009.
The first race got away in a good force three to four winds. First around the windward mark, after starting from the pin end was Stephen Graham and Richard Adams (Northampton SC) chased by Alan Johnson and Roo Johnson (SCYC) and Ges Brown and Chris Blundell (Chester SC). Alan and Roo pushed the leaders hard and finally got past on the final beat to take the win.

photo Janice Bottomley
The second race sailed back to back with the first started from an even line saw boats from either end coming out to the front. Alan and Roo rounded the windward mark first with Stephen and Richard second by a whisker. Jane and Nick Scutt (Middle Nene SC) pushing Ges and Chris for third. The excellent course set by the race officer William Jeffcote added to the drama with some downwind legs providing some close fought battles, but Stephen and Richard got the upwind shifts right to take the win.
After lunch the third race got away with plenty of chaos at the pin end. Alan and Roo`s mainsheet fell apart at the leeward mark but after a lengthy stop to fix it they still managed to finish second. Stephen and Richard won, in the shifty and gusty conditions giving plenty of opportunity to gain or lose places. Brian Garrison and Tim Elliott (Hallamshire) had a disastrous start but pulled up to fifth. Ges and Chris were again third with Jack Banks and Penny Jeffcote (Notts County SC) sailing soundly to come fourth.

Area Champions 2009 Steve Graham and Richard Adams - photo Janice Bottomley
Sunday brought a much lighter and more variable wind. The fourth race got underway after a short postponement to allow the wind to settle. At the first windward mark Ges and Chris led from Jane and Nick. During the race the wind went considerably lighter and more variable leading to much place changing throughout the fleet. On the last leg of this shortened race, Alan and Roo and Brian and Tim tacked off to the one side of the course and got some wind to claim second and third positions. Jane and Nick were fourth with Stephen and Richard fifth.
The fleet set out to start the fifth and final race after yet another postponement for the wind to settle again. However the wind soon died completely and the last race was abandoned before it was started leaving Stephen and Richard the new Midland area champions.
Stephen on behalf of all the competitors thanked Notts County SC for a good weekend both on and off the water.

7th June 2009 saw 23 boats attend round 4 of the Top Helm Series and joint with the Midland Double Chine Series. Both sponsored by Speed Sails. We all arrived at Rudyard, a place made famous by Top Gear with the 'Toyboata'.
Race 1 got under way after a total recall, every boat was practically over the line. We used the wrong transit. Up the first leg Martin & Laurence Davies (Rugby & Daventry) held 1st with Steve Blackburn & Rob Lee (WLYC) in 2nd the wind was swirling, gusting and could just change direction without any warning. Steve was one of the 1st to capsize with many following through the next few legs. Dave & Beth Porter were excelling in the conditions and soon moved to 1st. Karen Morris & Lisa Woods (Etherow) also moved through the fleet and held 2nd, with Jonathon Woodward & Alex Halliwell (Redditch) finishing 3rd.
It was bitterly cold, with a fluky wind from the east for Rudyard Lake Open Meeting
After a short rest, we set sail for race 2. The wind had swung and was be fairly well behaved. A clean start for all and Dave Porter and Ges Brown & Dennis Swain (Chester) had superior starts. Alan Johnson & Jane Hivey (SCYC) held third and even moved in to 1st for a while. As the rain began the wind decreased. Dave Porter took full advantage to take the win and the Open Meeting. Ges Brown also moved back to third with Steve Blackburn overtook to take 3rd.
Time for a well deserved lunch, cold wet and a confused were the sailors as the came to land. Not sure what had quite hit them. Excellent buffet was laid out. Jacket Potatoes, Salad Cus Cus and much more. I particularly like desert, Apple Pie and Cream. Luckily while we were enjoying our lunch. The wind had building up again, rain reduced and stopped. So race 3 could begin.
Close racing as Tony Woods leads Alan Johnson, Ges Brown and Paul Young
Tony Woods & Charlie Berry (Etherow) and Steve Blackburn made the most of the start. Jonathon Woodward came from the back to hold contention and Ges Brown also challenged. The top four seemed to escape from the middle pack, I’m quite sure every sailor in the top four held 1st at one time through the race. Tony held his lead to finish 1st with Jonathon in 2nd and Steve in 3rd. John Berry & Ben Steel (Etherow) took full advantage of a wind shift and finished forth.

Barnt Green - by Jonathan Woodward, Ges Brown and Paul Young
This combined Midland/Severnside event was the sixth in the 2009 Midland Area Double Chine series sponsored by Speed Sails and was held at Barnt Green SC on Sunday 10th May.
The seventeen boat fleet included visitors from Chester, Northampton, Frampton, Emberton Park, Tamworth, Shustoke, Redditch, Rugby and Midland sailing clubs.
The light and variable wind tested the patience of both the competitors and race officer alike. In the first race Martin and Laurence Davies (Rugby and Daventry SC) led at the first mark followed by Ges Brown and Dennis Swain (Chester S&CC) in second with Bob Suggitt and Kate Brooks (Barnt Green SC) third and Steve Graham/Chris Blundell (Northampton SC) fourth.

Close racing for the 17 boats at Bant Green Open in May
Later on a run Steve and Chris, Bob and Kate and Ges and Dennis lost some ground on the left side of the course allowing Jon Woodward and Alex Halliwell (Redditch SC) to catch up. These five boats then battled constantly. At the finish Bob and Kate were first, Jon and Alex second, Martin and Laurence third, Ges and Dennis fourth with Steve and Chris recovering well to take fifth.
After an excellent lunch from Sally’s Galley, the second race sailed in similar conditions saw three new leaders at the first mark. This time Barry Moss and Julie Moore (Shustoke SC) were first from Jon and Alex in second and Geoff Coxe and Sue Beyon (Frampton on Severn SC) third. On a following run Ges and Dennis went right and pulled through to second behind Jon and Alex. These pairs broke free from the fleet during the next lap. On the final lap Steve and Chris went low on the reach sailing around the outside to gain third just behind the leaders. Ges and Dennis took the lead on this leg closely followed by Jon and Alex and Steve and Chris, these positions were then held to the finish.
As the wind filled in for the start of the third race, opinions were divided about which end of the line to start. Mike Cossey and Donald Pickworth (Tamworth/BGSC) and Martin and Laurence went for the shore end with the rest of the fleet going for the pin end. Halfway up the beat Mike and Donald and Martin and Laurence were buried but they managed to find extra wind to go round the first mark first and third with Ges and Dennis in second. Ges and Dennis managed to pass Mike and Donald down the next reach with Bob and Kate, Steve and Chris and Phil Kirk and Ed Higson (Frampton on Severn SC) all in contention.
Up the next beat Ges and Dennis managed to pull away, with all the other places up for grabs. Steve and Chris managed to pull ahead of the chasing pack, closely followed by Phil and Ed, Martin and Laurence and Bob and Kate. Mike had an incident at the leeward mark resulting in a capsize with young stand in crew Donald getting wet.
The next couple of laps saw Phil and Ed pass Steve and Chris to take second with Steve and Chris third, Bob and Kate fourth and Martin and Laurence fifth. The wind continued to get up with the race finishing in this order.
Ges Brown thanked everyone at Barnt Green SC for a good day.

Sutton Sailing Club - By Paul Young
This event, the second in the 2009 Midland area Double Chine series sponsored by Speed Sails, was held at Sutton SC on Saturday 4th April.
The ten boats included visitors from as far away as Wigan, Sheffield, Northampton, and other more local clubs, who enjoyed a dry sunny day with a moderate westerly wind.
In the first race, Steve Graham and James Hill (Northampton SC) was first at the windward mark and continued to lead for a lap until Alan and Matt Johnson (SCYC) passed them.
Steve and James and Ges Brown and Dennis Swain (Hallamshire) then continued to battle with each other with Steve and James regaining second place on the penultimate lap. At the finish Alan and Matt were first, Steve and James second, Ges and Dennis third and Paul Young and Therese o` Toole (Brookvale and Sparkhill SC) fourth.
After an excellent lunch the second race started on a slightly different course, at the first mark it was Alan and Matt who led followed by Paul and Therese and then Kevin Rose and Naomi Bilton (Olton Mere SC). Alan and Matt built on their lead whilst behind Paul and Therese and Ges and Dennis battled for second. On the second lap Ges and Dennis seized second position which they held to the finish. Behind, Paul and Therese remained in third, with Steve and James and Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) battling hard for fourth.
On the last lap the excitement built as Paul and Therese, Steve and James and Mike and Christine caught up and lapped the back markers on a busy gusty gybe mark in front of the clubhouse, Paul and Therese just held onto third place with Mike and Christine reading the windshifts well to snatch fourth place and leave Steve and James to rue their ill fortune.
A windshift before the start of the third race saw the fleet starting at the other end of the line. Alan and Matt led at the first mark with Ges and Dennis second. The following broad reach saw the fleet close up and become very compact at the leeward mark. Steve and James and Mike and Christine, emerged from this to battle for third place. Paul and Therese recovered from a bad start to gain third by the next windward mark. Ges and Dennis gave Alan and Matt a much closer race passing them to lead only for Alan and Matt to retake the lead by lap four. Some close racing saw Steve and James finish third with Mike and Christine fourth.
Alan Johnson thanked everyone at Sutton SC and the other competitors for an excellent day.

Middle Nene SC - by Steve Graham, Russell Short, Jane Scutt and Paul Young
The first 2009 National circuit event was a combined Midland / Eastern area meeting held at Middle Nene Sailing Club on Sunday 19th April, sponsored by both Pinnell and Bax and Speed Sails.
Twenty boats arrived to contest this event held in glorious sunshine with ten to fifteen mph winds. The first race got away after a general recall and saw Steve Graham and James Holmes (Northampton SC) round the windward mark first followed by Martin Weatherstone and Karen Jewkes (Midland SC). At the leeward mark Steve and James were caught out on the wrong side of a wind shift allowing Jane and Nick Scutt (Middle Nene SC) to take the lead. Jane and Nick then continued to hold the lead until the last beat, when some good sailing by Russell Short and Kate Fry (Rotherham SC) allowed them to pull past a take the honours, Jane and Nick were second and Steve and James third.
The second race, sailed back to back with the first and on a new course saw the wind shift left as the start gun sounded. Tim and Hannah Sadler (Ripon SC) pulled away from the line on port followed by Russell and Kate. A starboard rounding of the first mark in shifty conditions called for a very focused approach. Jane and Nick having played the shifts on left hand side rounded third. After much battling throughout the race the final order was Tim and Hannah first, Russell and Kate Second and Jane and Nick third.
Lunch was served with much discussion on the new flyaway pole system as boats one, two and three were all still using their trusty old jib sticks.
The third race was again sailed in excellent conditions, Jonathan Woodward (Redditch SC) ably crewed by local lad Daniel Wigmore sailed excellently to lead at the first mark and then built upon this to finish first; Tim and Hannah broke their tiller extension but still managed a second. Third would have been Martin and Karen but Jane and Nick were awesome up the short beat to snatch third at the finish.
Nigel and Diana Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC) who were on equal points with Tim and Jo Coleman (Snettisham Beach SC) after two races sailed well in the last race to win the Silver fleet prize. Niall and Duncan Rennie (Melton Mowbray SC) were the youngest sailors and using smaller sails comfortably finished the third race showing great promise for the future.

This event the fourth in the 2009 Midland area Double Chine series sponsored by Speed Sails was held at Earlswood Lakes SC on Sunday 3rd May.
The thirteen boats included visitors from Tamworth, Rugby, Midland and Olton Mere sailing clubs who enjoyed a dry day with a moderate westerly wind which was gusty at times.
In the first race Kevin Rose and Gill Bilton (Olton Mere SC) got the best start and led at the first mark, second was Paul Young and Abi Spurr (Midland SC) who managed to pass Kevin and Gill at the next downwind mark and then lead for the next two to three laps. Nigel Allso and Kate Brazier (Tamworth SC) defending champions soon picked their way through the fleet to gain second place, until a superior mark rounding at windmill buoy allowed them to take the lead which they held to the finish. Second were Paul and Abi with Martin and Laurence Davies (Rugby and Daventry SC) third.
After an excellent lunch the second race got underway on a slightly different course, Ian Ingram and James Gardener (Earlswood Lakes SC) made a brilliant start to lead from start to finish, behind Kevin and Gill were second around the first mark with Paul and Abi third. Nigel and Kate in fourth position soon passed both of these boats to hold second place but were unable to catch Ian and James who won convincingly. Third were Paul and Abi.
This left the meeting wide open with much to play for in the third race, which was sailed on a new course. At the first mark Nigel and Kate led from Martin and Laurence with Ian and James third. Behind Mike Cossey and Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) tacked in Kevin and Gill`s water and whilst doing their penalty turns, Paul and Abi seized their opportunity to pass both boats to claim fourth position. A lap later Paul and Abi caught Ian and James at Devil buoy on port and starboard to gain third place and tried to exert pressure on the two leading boats but with no success. On the last lap Martin made a bad mark rounding having dropped the mainsheet but Nigel and Kate were unable to capitalise on this error and had to be content with second place. Paul and Abi finished third again with Ian and James fourth allowing them to snatch third place overall on the tie break. Winning helm Nigel Allso thanked everybody at Earlswood SC for an excellent day.

Tamworth SC - 16 May - by Martin Bottomley
This event was the seventh event in the Speed Sails Midland Area Double Chine Series was held at Tamworth SC on Saturday 16th May. Two visitors joined the six club boats to race in wet and windy conditions.
In the first race Mike Cossey & Christine Barron (Tamworth SC) took an early lead closely pursued by Nigel Allso & Kate Brazier (Tamworth SC) at the windward mark Mike & Christine mis judged their rounding touching the mark, whilst completing their penalty turn Nigel & Kate took the lead and were never caught, taking line honours with Mike & Christine second. Hugh Nethercott & Allan Roper (Tamworth SC) took third position. In the difficult conditions there were various capsizes.
After an excellent lunch the second race got under way on a new course. After ten minutes a squall came through resulting in more capsizes, but unaffected the three leaders again finished in the same order.
The third and final race got under way with the same course as race two but this time Mike & Christine took line honours. Our thanks to Tamworth SC and their race team for a good day's sailing.
